Types of Surveys

Pre-Purchase Survey

Pre-purchase surveys most often include out-of-the-water (hull bottom and underwater gear), in-water inspection (dockside testing of all onboard systems), and Sea Trial (a test run where the vessel is evaluated while underway).

Pre-purchase surveys are very thorough and are acceptable documents to submit when a survey is requested by an insurer. Expensive repairs are often identified during all three portions of a full pre-purchase survey; in the water, out of the water, and during Sea Trial. Pre-purchase surveys include a valuation, or appraisal, of the vessel’s open market value. The value may not reflect extreme fluctuations in value caused by unusual market conditions.

Insurance Renewal Report

Insurance surveys are typically completed out of the water when an insurer requests a survey for a new insurance policy, or for renewal of an existing policy. An insurance survey is a basic survey designed to establish the soundness of a vessel, condition of onboard systems and equipment, and suitability for intended use, so that an insurer can determine if issuance of an insurance policy is an acceptable risk. Insurance surveys include a valuation, or appraisal, of the vessel’s open market value.

Insurance surveys may be partially completed in the water, however, this is generally an interim measure for mid-season renewals (to avoid the cost of a mid-season haul out), and a bottom survey is typically required after fall haul-out. This approach may satisfy the insurer in some situations. Vessel owners should verify with the insurer as to which approach is acceptable.

Damage Survey

We can provide consumers, insurers and repair facilities with complete repair consultation. From root cause analysis to estimation, job planning, problem-solving and execution on time and on budget, Causeway Boats Marine Surveys offers guidance and direction on some of the most challenging repair jobs in the recreational marine industry. We work closely with insurers and manufacturers, helping to ensure an economical approach to the repair process without compromising safety and fundamental repair quality.

We also work well with technicians and service managers because we know the repair business inside & out. We are tech-savvy and understand the challenges faced by repair facilities.

Rigging Inspections

Rig inspections are a critical part of your yacht maintenance. Your yacht rigging should be checked regularly by a professional rigger to make sure there are no unknown issues you can not see from deck level that may fail when under load or even when static. Many insurance companies ask for rig checks once the rigging is 10 years or older.

Our inspections include:

  • Standing rigging
  • Mast head assembly
  • Electrics
  • Mast, boom and pools
  • Furling gear
  • Running rigging
  • All deck gear
  • Chain plates
  • Guard wires

RIB Inspections

Rigid inflatable boats (RIB’s) are inflatable boats that have structure i.e. a deck, a bow, transoms, with all multiple of layouts to maximize top speed and performance. They are very popular in commercial use as fast, stable, forgiving platforms making them easy to skipper and operate.

Ultrasonic Surveys of Hulls

Ultrasonic testing is a non-destructive method for testing the structure of a steel or alloy vessel. It grants comparable figures at given locations. The results give an insight into the vessels condition at that time and with a 5 yearly test cycle, we can produce analysis on previous results.

Matrimonal Valuation

As a step in reaching a financial settlement it is important to find out what your joint assets are and to make sure that these assets are correctly valued.

If you or your solicitor need advice on a vessel’s valuation or specialist advice towards court proceedings we can help you.

Repairs & Consulations

Causeway Boats Marine Surveys has been providing marine-specific claims management services to the insurance industry for many years.

We provide marine-specific expertise. That means we know boats and we know the boating industry. Our marine surveyors have extensive technical expertise and we believe that a big part of an appraiser’s responsibility is investigative in nature. That’s why we have been contracted by industrial customers to perform investigations and make recommendations on their marine operations.
